Social media is now seen as a necessity for marketing your business, but it can be overwhelming for small businesses to figure out the best way to utilize social media. You might not understand how to use the various social media sites or which ones make the most sense for your business. Or you might know how to use them, but not have the time to devote to creating and posting content on a regular basis.
You might also think that social media is a waste of time and not necessary. This is not a good way to think because there are so many people who use sites, like Facebook, on a daily basis. It is such an easy and affordable way to keep your business in front of their faces, whether it be on their cell phones, tablets, or computers.
Pros and Cons of Using Social Media
One of the best parts of social media is how easy it is to use. If you own a shop, you can snap a picture of a new item on your phone and quickly post it on your Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, or wherever else. If you work at an art gallery, you can livestream a video of an artist at work right from your phone on Facebook and now on Instagram. No fancy equipment required.
One of the downfalls of social media, however, is that since pretty much anyone can use it, there is a lot of competition to get noticed. Since sites like Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have basically become giant advertising sites, many companies have to pay to boost content to get it noticed by more people.
The flip side of that is that is incredibly cheap to advertise on social media. You can run an advertisement for $1 a day if that is all you can afford at the moment. You can also drill down to exactly the type of customer you are looking for, whether it be a location, age range, occupation, interests, or whatever else .
Another problem with social media is that you probably won’t see results instantaneously It can take some time to build up a following and gain the trust of your followers before they actually hand over their money. This is why many people abandon social media marketing because they feel there is no return on investment. This is completely understandable, but it is important to consider that the more you are putting your business in front of people’s faces, the more likely they are to remember your name when they are ready to buy.
Coming Up With A Strategy
While at first you might just start posting pictures and events at random on your social media pages, eventually you should come up with a strategy. This social media strategy can be as structured or as fluid as you’d like, but having something written down that you can reference will help make sure you are consistent. Consistency is key with these social media sites. They like people who are on them and using them a lot.
First, you should think about what sites you want to use to market your business. The big ones are Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. You can also use Snapchat, LinkedIn, and Google+. (Google+ is a great way to help your search engine optimization for your website.)
Second, start with something simple like, for example, posting to the Facebook page on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Stick with this for a while. If it doesn’t seem to be working, try switching up the dates and times that you post. There are times that experts think are the best for posting on the various social media sites. These are good starting points, but they may not work for your particular business so you should spend some time experimenting.
Third, you have to come up with content to post! This can be time consuming and overwhelming when you need to take pictures, videos, write blog posts, create infographics, and think of whatever else you can to post on your social media sites. Right now video is popular content on sites like Facebook. You also need to make sure you are engaging your audience so they respond to your content. The best thing one of your followers can do is share your content. This is how your business is introduced to other people who might not have found it on their own. This is also how content goes viral.
You also want to make sure you are directing people where you want them to go, whether that is to your website, or to sign up for a newsletter, or to click on a link to a product. You should always have a call to action in your posts. This can be as simple as putting Click Here!
